SANDALS

Like every summer, when temperatures start to rise, we start to shed our shoes and show off our feet at their best. Therefore, women's sandals are the most used at this time of year. From the most feminine heeled sandals to flip flops that until recently were reserved exclusively for use in swimming pools and beaches.
But sandals are a type of footwear that has been present in our attire for centuries, without leaving us a single summer.

Do you know the history of sandals?

We could say that the origin of the footwear began with the sandal. There is evidence that the history of the shoe dates back to 10,000 BC, at the end of the Paleolithic period. Paintings from this era have been discovered in caves in Spain and the south of France that already refer to some types of footwear.
In Egyptian hypogeos, underground chambers used for multiple burials, paintings were found that represented the different phases of leather preparation and footwear. The sandals of the Egyptians, whose use excluded women and slaves, were made of straw, papyrus or palm fiber.

In Mesopotamia raw leather shoes were common, tied to the feet by strips of the same material. The coturnos were symbols of high social position. The Greeks came to create different models for the left foot and the right foot.

In Rome, footwear indicated social class: consuls wore white shoes, senators wore brown shoes turned on four black leather ribbons tied with two knots, and the traditional footwear of the legions were the ankle boots that discovered the fingers. In the Middle Ages, both men and women wore open leather shoes that had a shoe-like shape. The most common material was cowhide, but the top quality boots were made of goatskin.
A curious fact: in ancient Israel, when a man refused to carry out brother-in-law's marriage to a widow, she took away her sandal and, to his shame, was called "The house of the one to whom the sandal was taken". The transfer of ownership or the right of re-purchase was guaranteed by delivering the sandal to another person.

SANDALS: ETERNAL TREND

In other words, such a type of footwear, such as the sandal, goes back thousands of years. Now it has become a timeless add-on that survives trends.. We had to wait until the 1920s to re-encompass sandals in the world of fashion. It was achieved by applying the heels, which allowed to recover the glamour and charm of this type of footwear.
Finally, the newly released fingers with their fingernails painted red, stood out over the heeled sandals. Famous designers of that era took for a walk in their imagination achieving spectacular party sandals that marked the trends of women's shoes to this day. Mention also the invention in 1936 of the wedge-shaped heel that would later give way to current platform sandals.

Now that you know more about this footwear, it's time to get to know the proposals we show you in Siroco Mojácar: cheap sandals and comfortable sandals in their different versions: flat sandals, sandals with wedges, with heel slats or our extensive offer in boots sandals, one of our most iconic shoes every spring-summer.
